Every minute counts when an emergency occurs. Knowing first aid can make the difference in serious situations. In this article, discover the statistics, what to do in an emergency, and what training is available to prepare you to save lives.

  1. First aid in Luxembourg: figures

In 2023, the Corps grand-ducal d'incendie et de secours (CGDIS) carried out 70,660 interventions, 81% of which involved rescuing people. The SAMU (Emergency Medical Services) responded 9,645 times, and the 112 Emergency Response Center handled 276,353 calls. Source: CGDIS

According to the LRC (Luxembourg Resuscitation Council), approximately 400 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in Luxembourg. Without rapid intervention, the survival rate is extremely low, between 2% and 3%. Every minute saved increases the chances of survival, so it is essential to be trained in first aid.

  1. What to do in an emergency: life-saving measures

When faced with an emergency situation, adopting the right reflexes is crucial:

  1. Secure the scene: make sure the environment is safe for you and the victim.

  2. Call for help: Dial 112 and provide clear, precise information.

  3. Provide assistance: depending on the situation, take the appropriate actions:

    • Recovery position for an unconscious person who is breathing.

    • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) in case of cardiac arrest.

    • Compression of severe hemorrhages.

These simple actions can keep the victim alive while waiting for professional help to arrive. This information is not a substitute for proper training.
